Trial of Former Deputy Moved to Peoria County

A Sangamon County judge has ruled that the trial of a former deputy charged in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey will be moved to Peoria County.

The decision came Tuesday, as Grayson appeared in court where his attorney was arguing for a venue change. In the motion filed with the court, Grayson’s legal team cited extensive media coverage and community engagement in the case, stating it would be “virtually impossible to empanel a fair and impartial jury in Sangamon County.”

The judge agreed and ordered that both jury selection and the trial itself take place outside of Sangamon County.

Grayson is charged with the murder of Sonya Massey, who was killed inside her home after calling police during an apparent mental health crisis. Body camera footage captured the entire incident.

Grayson has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. His legal team has made multiple unsuccessful attempts to secure his release ahead of trial.

Grayson is scheduled to return to court on April 23.
