State Senator Doris Turner (D-Springfield) announced nearly $320,000 in new grant funding aimed at enhancing tourism along the historic Route 66 corridor in Springfield, with a focus on economic development and cultural preservation.

“Investing in tourism boosts the local economy and creates more jobs while uplifting the community,” said Turner. “With this funding, we have a great opportunity to showcase Route 66 and its ties to Springfield and Central Illinois.”

The funding is part of a broader $4 million allocation administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity through the Route 66 Grant Program. The initiative supports efforts to promote, preserve, and educate the public about the Route 66 corridor in preparation for its 100th anniversary in 2026.

The Springfield Illinois Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive $300,000 to carry out four tourism projects designed to highlight key Route 66 sites throughout the area. These efforts aim to enhance the visitor experience and draw greater attention to the cultural and historical significance of the legendary highway.

An additional $20,000 was awarded to the bureau to partner with The Pharmacy Gallery & Art Space for a special exhibition celebrating the work of artist Bob Waldmire. Known for his colorful maps and whimsical depictions of Route 66 landmarks, Waldmire's artwork has long been associated with the spirit of the "Mother Road" that stretches from Illinois to California. The exhibit will be free and open to the public.

The funding arrives as local and state officials prepare to commemorate a century of Route 66, a symbol of American travel and nostalgia that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
