Unresponsive Man Fatally Attacked by Dog

A Springfield man died Sunday after being found unresponsive in the 1200 block of North 15th Street.


Two people found a man unresponsive and attempted CPR before police arrived. While performing CPR, a pitbull became aggravated and attacked; the two people assisting the downed individual sustained minor injuries.


According to the Springfield Police Department, when officers arrived on the scene, they found a pitbull attacking a man lying on the ground. Officers were forced to shoot and kill the dog.


Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, identified the man as Jonathan Mendenhall, 34 of Springfield. Mendenhall was pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital at 4:04 p.m.


Mendenhall's cause of death remains under investigation.
