[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]

Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, is a vibrant city known for its stunning lakes, thriving arts scene, and university-town atmosphere. With plenty of parks, museums, and a lively downtown, Madison offers something for everyone — whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or foodie. The city’s setting between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona creates a beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities, while the energy of the University of Wisconsin brings a youthful vibe to the area.

To get to Madison from Springfield, take I-55 north, then switch to I-39 and head toward I-90. Continue along I-90/94, and you’ll arrive in Madison in about 4.5 hours. The drive offers a scenic journey through the rolling hills of Wisconsin.

Once in Madison, explore the State Capitol building, which offers free tours and spectacular views of the city from its observation deck. If you’re an art lover, visit the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. For nature enthusiasts, the Olbrich Botanical Gardens and the lakeshore paths are ideal for a peaceful stroll. Don’t forget to check out the local food scene — with everything from fresh farm-to-table restaurants to food trucks lining the streets.

For accommodations, consider staying near the University of Wisconsin campus for easy access to the city’s main attractions. Whether you’re exploring the outdoors, indulging in local cuisine, or soaking in the art scene, Madison makes for a great weekend retreat.
