[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip — and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]
Located approximately four hours and 30 minutes northeast of Sangamon County, Spring Green, Wisconsin, offers a weekend getaway filled with architecture, natural beauty and small-town charm. Situated in the scenic Wisconsin countryside near the Wisconsin River, the community is known for its connection to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, along with its outdoor attractions, local shops and cultural experiences.
The area's most famous attraction is Taliesin, the former home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright. Originally built in 1911, the estate is considered one of the most significant architectural landmarks in the country and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation recognizing Wright's work.
Visitors can take guided tours of the property to learn about Wright's life, architectural philosophy and the history of the estate. Several tour options are available, ranging from shorter visits to more extensive explorations of the buildings and grounds. The estate demonstrates Wright's approach to organic architecture, which emphasizes creating buildings that complement their natural surroundings.
Surrounded by rolling hills, open fields and wooded landscapes, Taliesin provides visitors with an opportunity to experience both architectural history and the Wisconsin countryside. Even for those unfamiliar with Wright's work, the estate offers an interesting look at how architecture and nature can come together.
Beyond Taliesin, the Spring Green area offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. One nearby destination worth exploring is Parfrey's Glen State Natural Area, located within Devil's Lake State Park. The natural area features a narrow gorge, a flowing stream and wooded surroundings that provide a peaceful setting for hiking and photography.
The approximately 1.6-mile round-trip hike takes visitors toward the scenic gorge and waterfall. Portions of the hike require navigating a rocky creek bed and crossing shallow water, making appropriate footwear important. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the natural landscape and take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest.
For those interested in additional attractions, Spring Green is also home to the House on the Rock, a unique destination featuring unusual architecture and extensive collections of exhibits. The attraction includes an impressive carousel, themed galleries and the Infinity Room, which extends over the surrounding valley. Its combination of architecture and imaginative displays makes it another popular stop in the area.
Visitors who enjoy live entertainment can also consider American Players Theatre, a professional theater located just outside Spring Green. The theater offers seasonal performances in both an outdoor amphitheater and an indoor venue, giving visitors another way to experience the area's cultural attractions.
Spring Green also has a collection of locally owned shops, restaurants and galleries worth exploring. The Spring Green General Store is a popular stop for breakfast or lunch, offering a café alongside a retail shop featuring gifts, clothing and locally made products. Housed in a converted cheese warehouse, the business has become a familiar destination for visitors exploring the community.
The surrounding region also offers farm-to-table dining experiences, giving travelers opportunities to sample local flavors after a day of sightseeing. Whether spending time browsing shops, enjoying a meal or taking a scenic drive through the countryside, visitors can find plenty of ways to slow down and enjoy the area.
With its combination of architectural history, outdoor recreation and small-town attractions, Spring Green offers something for travelers with a variety of interests.
