In this ongoing series, “Wild Neighbors,” we take a closer look at the wild animals that share our neighborhoods, farmland, and natural spaces throughout Sangamon County. From the skies to the waterways—and everything in between—these species are part of everyday life in Central Illinois and play important roles in the local ecosystem.

The Big Brown Bat is a nocturnal insect-eater that plays a crucial role in controlling insect populations across Sangamon County. These bats are primarily known for their ability to consume vast amounts of mosquitoes, moths, and other flying insects, making them valuable to local communities as natural pest control agents. Big Brown Bats use echolocation to navigate through the night and locate their prey, making them highly efficient hunters even in total darkness.

During the day, Big Brown Bats roost in caves, trees, barns, and even attics, where they hang upside down in colonies. They are typically solitary when hunting but gather in large groups during the winter months when they hibernate. These bats are especially active at dusk and dawn, when they emerge from their roosts in search of food. Their small size and excellent flying abilities allow them to capture insects mid-flight, making them highly effective at keeping local insect populations in check.

Unfortunately, Big Brown Bats are facing several threats, including habitat loss, diseases like white-nose syndrome, and pesticide use, which can poison the insects they consume. Despite these challenges, they continue to be an essential part of Sangamon County’s ecosystem, and local conservation efforts to protect their habitats are critical for maintaining healthy bat populations.
