{In this ongoing series, “Wild Neighbors”, we take a closer look at the wild animals that share our neighborhoods and natural spaces here in Sangamon County. From the skies to the waters, and everything in between, these creatures play vital roles in the ecosystems around us.}
The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most common and recognizable birds of prey found in Sangamon County. These majestic birds are often seen soaring high above the county’s open fields, using thermals to stay aloft while searching for prey. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot small mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, and even other birds from great distances. Once they have identified their target, they make a swift and dramatic dive to capture it with powerful talons.
Known for their reddish-brown tails, which are especially visible in flight, Red-tailed Hawks can be found year-round in Sangamon County. They often perch on tall trees, utility poles, or other high vantage points, scanning the surrounding landscape for movement. While they are most commonly spotted in rural areas, these hawks have adapted well to suburban environments, where open spaces such as golf courses or even large parks provide ideal hunting grounds.
Their diet consists primarily of small mammals, but they are opportunistic hunters and will also scavenge on carrion when food is scarce. The Red-tailed Hawk’s presence in an area indicates a healthy, thriving ecosystem, as they help control populations of rodents and other small creatures. This bird of prey plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of local wildlife, keeping smaller animal populations in check.
