Flying from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport offers a great deal for consumers, supported by recent industry data on airline prices and cancellations. Metrics comparing Capital Airport with other central Illinois airports show Springfield is competitive in both flight reliability and ticket pricing.
In 2023, passengers at Capital Airport paid less to fly to seven out of the top ten preferred destinations compared to other central Illinois airports, including those in Bloomington, Champaign, and Peoria.
According to the Springfield Airport Authority, Capital Airport’s average one-way fares to top destinations ranged from $225 to $250. By comparison, Champaign (CMI) and Peoria (PIA) passengers paid between $300 and $325, while Bloomington (BMI) travelers paid an average of $275 to $300. The reported fares exclude taxes and additional fees.
Flight reliability was also strong at Capital Airport. From June 2023 to March 2024, American Airlines completed 98% of its scheduled flights at central Illinois airports. Springfield, along with Bloomington and Champaign, averaged a 97% completion rate, while Peoria led with 99%.
“These figures show that Springfield remains competitive in areas that matter to consumers. Local fliers see favorable pricing and good operational performance by the carriers serving Capital Airport as compared to our peers,” said Dianne Barghouti-Hardwick, Vice Chair of the Springfield Airport Authority Board and Chair of its Air Service and Marketing Committee.
“The Authority constantly works with current carriers and other potential service providers to improve the services offered for our region. Better schedules and more flights on American Airlines are a top priority, along with restoring service with United,” she added.
Officials with the Airport authority say that with competitive fares and strong flight completion rates, Capital Airport continues to be a reliable and affordable option for Central Illinois travelers.
