[This story is part of Weekend on the Road, a monthly series highlighting Midwest getaways within six hours of Sangamon County. Each month, we’ll feature a new destination that’s close enough for a quick trip and just far enough to feel like you’re really away.]

A 2-hour and 45-minute drive south of Springfield, Lake of the Ozarks is one of Missouri’s most popular destinations for water activities, outdoor recreation and weekend getaways.

With its sprawling 1,150 miles of shoreline, the lake offers visitors plenty of room to spread out and enjoy time on the water. Boating, fishing and water sports are among the biggest draws, making the area a natural fit for travelers who want to spend much of their trip outside. For some visitors, that may mean a relaxing day on the lake. For others, it may mean a faster-paced weekend built around activities such as wakeboarding or other water sports.

The area is also home to several marinas and boat rental options, making it easier for visitors to get out on the water even if they do not own a boat. That accessibility is part of what makes Lake of the Ozarks a practical weekend destination. Families, couples and groups of friends can plan a trip around the lake without needing to travel far from central Illinois.

For those who prefer land-based activities, Lake of the Ozarks State Park offers another way to enjoy the area’s natural setting. The expansive park includes miles of hiking trails, including routes with views of the lake and surrounding forest.

One option is the Rocky Mount Trail, which provides a scenic route through the park. The trail gives visitors a chance to slow down, take in the wooded landscape and enjoy views of the lake along the way. It can work well for a morning hike before heading to the water or as a quieter afternoon activity after a busy day.

The state park also includes picnic areas for visitors looking for a more relaxed way to spend time outdoors. For families or travelers wanting a lower-key stop, packing a lunch and spending part of the day in the park can offer a break from the busier lakefront areas.

Beyond the water and trails, Lake of the Ozarks also offers dining and nightlife options that can help fill out a weekend itinerary. After a day spent boating, fishing, hiking or exploring, visitors can head to one of the area’s local restaurants. The Fish & Co. is one option for those looking for seafood and a lakefront view.

That mix of outdoor activity, lakefront dining and evening entertainment gives the destination a broad appeal. A trip can be built around relaxation, adventure or a combination of both. Visitors can spend one day on the water, another in the park and still have time for dinner with a view before heading back home.

For Sangamon County residents looking for a weekend trip that does not require a long flight or a full week away, Lake of the Ozarks offers a close-to-home option with the feel of a true getaway. Whether the goal is a peaceful retreat, an active weekend outdoors or simply a change of scenery, the lake has enough variety to make the drive worthwhile.
