City Announces Shredding Event, Earth Fair

The City of Springfield is inviting residents to participate in two upcoming community events focused on personal security and environmental awareness later this month.

The city’s Public Works Department, in partnership with AARP Illinois, will host a free document-shredding event on Tuesday, April 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Chamberlain Park, 319 McCreery Ave. The event is designed to help residents safely dispose of sensitive documents and reduce the risk of identity theft.

Residents may bring up to five business-size boxes of documents for secure, on-site shredding at no cost. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be completed by calling 1-877-926-8300 or visiting the AARP event registration website. AARP also offers a Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 for those who have experienced or suspect scams.

Later in the week, the city will partner with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to host the Annual Earth Fair on Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Union Square Park, 500 E. Madison St.

The free, family-friendly event will include children’s activities, educational exhibits, food trucks, and interactive opportunities focused on environmental sustainability. The event will also be accessible to individuals who use American Sign Language.

"These events are about more than just awareness, they’re about taking care of our community,” said Mayor Misty Buscher. "By promoting sustainability and helping residents stay safe from fraud, we’re working together to make Springfield a healthier, stronger place to call home.”
