Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon recently updated the County Board on two significant developments for his office, the opening of the new Sangamon County Coroner’s Regional Facility and the achievement of national accreditation.
The $6 million facility, located in the renovated Sangamon South building, officially opened on June 11, 2025. The upgraded space brings all coroner operations under one roof, including autopsy, storage, investigation, and administrative functions. It features a refrigerated unit capable of holding 50, a freezer for 12, modern autopsy suites, evidence processing areas, and dedicated office space. By repurposing the existing building, the county saved more than $2 million, with part of the funding provided through federal ARPA funds.
The Coroner’s Office staff includes five full-time investigators, nine part-time investigators, and a board-certified forensic pathologist. In addition to serving Sangamon County, the office provides autopsy, transportation, forensic toxicology, radiology, and transcription services to 20 surrounding counties.
On July 8, 2025, the office earned accreditation from the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners. The distinction required meeting 100% of all mandatory standards and achieving at least 90% overall compliance among 285 standards. Nationwide, only 52 counties, including just four in Illinois, hold this recognition.
“I’m extremely proud of the hard work and professionalism of our Coroner’s Office staff,” Allmon said. “We take great pride in serving the people of Sangamon County and the surrounding region, and we are fortunate to have a County Board that supports our mission and provides the resources we need to achieve this level of excellence.”
