Coroner Identifies Man Shot to Death in Vehicle

On August 9, 2024, at approximately 2:24 p.m., Springfield Police responded to the intersection of South 13th Street and Cornell Avenue for a report of an unresponsive male inside a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered the male in the vehicle had been shot multiple times and was deceased.


Springfield Police detectives and crime scene arrived on scene to investigate the incident and process evidence.


Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon identified the man as, Qrrey Bates, 23, of Springfield. Bates was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy was done on August 10, 2024, and preliminary findings indicate Mr. Bates died from multiple gunshot wounds.
