The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office has earned national accreditation from the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners (IACME), recognizing the office’s adherence to rigorous professional and ethical standards in death investigation services.
The IACME is a professional organization that promotes excellence in medicolegal death investigation through the development of best practices, continuing education, and voluntary accreditation. Its standards are applied to coroner and medical examiner agencies across the United States and internationally.
The accreditation follows an extensive review process in which the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office was evaluated against 285 internationally recognized standards. To achieve accreditation, an agency must demonstrate full compliance with all mandatory benchmarks and maintain a minimum of 90 percent compliance overall.
“This accreditation is more than just a certificate. It recognizes the work we do every day and the standards we hold ourselves to,” said Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon. “From the moment a call comes in to the time we complete our reports, our office approaches every case with professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail. I’m incredibly proud of my staff and the work they do to serve families in some of their most difficult moments.”
The IACME’s accreditation process includes a comprehensive examination of administrative procedures, forensic practices, investigative protocols, and facility management. Participation in the review is voluntary, and only a select number of coroner and medical examiner offices nationwide have received this designation.
The Coroner’s Office was further supported in the process by the recent opening of the new regional morgue, a facility that consolidates autopsy, storage, investigative, and administrative functions under one roof. Officials say the enhanced infrastructure improves both efficiency and interdepartmental coordination, helping ensure the delivery of high-quality services for Sangamon County residents and neighboring communities.
In a statement, the IACME praised the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office for its transparency and dedication to external accountability, noting that successful accreditation reflects a clear commitment to professional standards and public trust.
