Springfield police and Crime Stoppers are asking for the public’s help as an investigation continues into the theft of copper downspouts from a downtown church. The incident occurred at First Presbyterian Church, located at 321 S. 7th Street, where officers responded to reports of criminal damage and theft during the early morning hours of January 18.

According to police, surveillance footage captured a suspect removing copper downspouts from the building at approximately 1 a.m. The individual is described as a white male wearing a black and yellow jacket featuring a large letter “B” or the number “8” on the left sleeve. Authorities believe a significant portion of the copper material was taken during the incident, causing damage to the property.

Investigators are hopeful that someone in the community may recognize the suspect or have information that could assist in identifying the individual involved. Images from the surveillance footage have been released to aid in the investigation, and police encourage anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area around the time of the theft to come forward.

Crime Stoppers reminds the public that tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 217-788-8427, using the P3 Tips mobile app, or submitting information online. Individuals who provide information leading to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,500.
