Crime Stoppers Promotes Crime Prevention

Crime Stoppers is reminding residents that community safety is a shared responsibility as National Crime Prevention Week is observed September 1 through September 7.

The organization is encouraging residents to take simple steps to help prevent crime around their homes and vehicles. Those steps include locking doors, windows and vehicles, keeping outdoor areas well-lit and making sure valuables are not left where they can easily be seen.

Crime Stoppers said prevention also extends beyond protecting personal property. Residents are encouraged to get to know their neighbors and stay involved in what is happening around them. Parents are also encouraged to talk with their children about making safe choices.

“Keeping Sangamon County safe takes all of us. Simple steps to prevent crime, looking out for your neighbors and speaking up when something doesn’t look right can make a real difference,” Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch said.

One of the biggest messages during Crime Prevention Week is simply to pay attention. If something does not look right, residents are encouraged not to ignore it and to report it rather than assuming someone else will make the call.

Crime Stoppers also emphasized the importance of looking out for one another. Being aware of what is happening in a neighborhood, communicating with neighbors and speaking up when something appears suspicious can all play a role in community safety.

“Pay attention. Speak up. And don’t assume someone else will make the call,” Crime Stoppers said.

The organization said safer communities do not happen by accident, but through residents working together and taking an active role in looking out for one another.
