Residents will have an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Springfield’s drinking water system next week as City Water, Light and Power opens its Water Plant to the public for an afternoon of tours, activities and educational exhibits.
The open house will take place Monday, June 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the CWLP Water Plant, 3100 Stevenson Drive, as part of the City’s Community Connections initiative. The event is open to CWLP customers as well as members of the public interested in learning more about the city’s water treatment operations.
Visitors will be able to meet Water Department employees, view equipment displays, participate in games and receive giveaways on the front lawn of the facility.
The event will also include guided walking tours of the plant at 4:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Tours will take guests through the water treatment process and include areas such as the pump stations, clarifiers and filter gallery.
Educational stations throughout the site will provide information on water quality, water conservation efforts, boating safety and operations of the lake boat patrol.
Mayor Misty Buscher said the event is intended to give residents a closer look at one of the city’s core public services and the employees responsible for operating it.
“Our water system is one of Springfield’s most important public services, and I’m excited for residents to have the opportunity to see it up close,” Buscher said. “The dedicated employees at CWLP work around the clock to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water to our community. This event gives the public a chance to learn more about that work and the people behind it.”
The open house is part of the City’s Community Connections program, an initiative designed to strengthen communication and accessibility between local government and residents. The program focuses on three areas: departmental open houses, outreach at the ward level and online engagement opportunities.
City officials encourage residents of all ages to attend and learn more about the services and infrastructure that support daily life across the community.
