Disney’s Frozen Opens at The Muni

The magic of Arendelle comes to Springfield this weekend as Disney’s Frozen opens at The Springfield Municipal Opera for a two-week run along the shores of Lake Springfield.

The production will be performed Friday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 2, before returning for four additional performances Wednesday, Aug. 5, through Saturday, Aug. 8. All shows begin at 8:30 p.m. at The Muni, 815 E. Lake Shore Drive. Tickets are available through MetroTix and at The Muni box office before each performance, subject to availability.

Based on Disney’s 2013 animated film and the Broadway adaptation that followed, Frozen tells the story of sisters Elsa and Anna as they navigate family, sacrifice and self-discovery in the kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa, born with the ability to create ice and snow, isolates herself after accidentally revealing her powers. When her abilities are unleashed during her coronation, Anna sets out to find her sister and restore both their relationship and the kingdom.

The original movie became a worldwide success, earning more than $1.2 billion at the global box office. It won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Let It Go,” while its soundtrack spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The film’s popularity led to a Broadway musical and helped establish Frozen as one of Disney’s most successful modern franchises.

The stage musical includes many of the songs made popular by the film, including “Let It Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “For the First Time in Forever.” It also features additional music written specifically for the Broadway production, expanding the story and its characters beyond the original movie.

The Springfield production is directed by Alyssa and DJ Shultz and features a cast of local performers supported by The Muni’s volunteer organization, one of the largest community theater groups of its kind in the country. Known for its outdoor amphitheater overlooking Lake Springfield, The Muni has entertained audiences for more than seven decades with Broadway-style productions during the summer months.

Frozen is the fourth mainstage production of The Muni’s 2026 season. Earlier productions included Mamma Mia!, All Shook Up and The Prince of Egypt. The season will conclude in August with Disney’s The Lion King Jr.

The musical earned three Tony Award nominations following its Broadway debut and has become one of Disney’s most frequently produced stage productions. While retaining the familiar story from the Academy Award-winning film, the stage version expands several characters and incorporates new musical numbers written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez alongside the film’s original songs.

The production combines live orchestration, large-scale musical numbers, elaborate costumes and stage effects to recreate the world of Arendelle in an outdoor theater setting.
