Downtown Springfield, Inc. has named Jay Shanle as its new executive director following a formal search process.

The announcement was made March 26 during the organization’s Get Your Kicks Gala at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield hotel. Shanle, who had been serving as interim executive director, will officially begin the role April 6.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the trust the DSI board and our community have placed in me, and I’m honored to step into the role of executive director,” said Shanle. "Downtown Springfield has shaped so much of my personal and professional life, and I’m energized by the opportunity to move this work forward. I couldn’t be more excited to continue collaborating with the people and partners who believe in the heart of our city.”

Shanle was selected following a search conducted by Always On Consulting.

"Jay’s passion for downtown is palpable, and we are enthusiastic to have found a new executive director who is ready to hit the ground running,” said David Lee, DSI Board President. "We look forward to the leadership and passion that Jay has showcased – from his time on staff to years on the board, as well as his handling during the interim term. Jay is uniquely qualified for this role, and I couldn't be more excited for him to lead our organization.”

Before his appointment, Shanle served as DSI’s director of communications and as program director for the Springfield Area Arts Council. He also played a role in the organization’s transition from a 501(c)(6) to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and has been involved in the “My Heart’s Downtown” campaign.

Shanle currently serves as co-chair of the Downtown Alliance, which is working to implement the Downtown Springfield and Mid-Illinois Medical District Master Plan.

"Downtown is, and always has been, an ever-changing environment, and DSI will continue to adapt as those changes unfold,” said Shanle. "There is no single solution that will address all of downtown; the work is ongoing, and that’s what makes it both challenging and exciting.”

He previously served six years on the DSI Board of Directors and on the INB Fire Fund Committee. His experience also includes work on DSI events such as the annual awards dinner, Friend of the Market Street Dinner and Momentum on Main Street programs. Prior to joining DSI staff, Shanle spent seven years with Conn's Hospitality Group as corporate administrator.

"We will remain committed to engaging the public, partnering with organizations across the community and seeking new, innovative approaches to address evolving needs,” said Shanle. "Together with our partners, we will strengthen the economic, cultural and social fabric of downtown. The future of DSI is one of innovation, collaboration and a shared belief in what our city can become.”

Among those partnerships is the Levitt AMP Springfield Music Series, a collaboration between DSI and the Springfield Area Arts Council that will continue through the 2026–2028 cycle.

Downtown Springfield, Inc. is a nationally accredited Main Street organization focused on enhancing the downtown experience for residents, businesses and visitors through collaboration, creativity and leadership.
