Former Rescue Squad Chief Killed in Wisconsin Crash

Terry Nydegger, the former chief of the Sangamon County Rescue Squad and longtime New Berlin police chief, died Monday following a crash in Wisconsin while returning home from vacation. He was 76.

Nydegger spent decades serving the New Berlin community in a variety of roles. He served on the New Berlin Village Board beginning in 1983 and spent more than 30 years with the New Berlin Police Department, including as chief of police. Beyond his work in law enforcement, he served as a medic for the SWAT team, was a member of the Sangamon County Dive Team and remained active in emergency response throughout Sangamon County.

The Sangamon County Rescue Squad announced Nydegger's death Tuesday in a Facebook post, remembering him as its longest-serving active member with 48 years of service.

"Terry proudly served the citizens of Sangamon County with honor, dedication and distinction for 48 years. Throughout countless emergencies over the decades, his calm presence, hands-on experience and steady leadership helped save many lives and guided those around him through difficult situations."

The rescue squad said Nydegger's legacy extends beyond the calls he answered and the emergencies he responded to.

"His impact on our organization, our community and everyone who had the privilege of serving beside him will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Terry's family, friends and fellow members during this difficult time."

Law enforcement agencies from across central Illinois also shared messages of remembrance following news of Nydegger's death.

In a Facebook post, the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office extended its condolences to Nydegger's family, the New Berlin Police Department and the Sangamon County Rescue Squad, adding that his "dedication to public service and his commitment to protecting others left a lasting impact on countless lives."

The Springfield Police Department also recognized Nydegger's career, expressing condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the New Berlin community while thanking him for his years of service.

Authorities have released few details about the crash. Nydegger was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run while traveling home from a vacation in Wisconsin. The crash remains under investigation, and additional information has not yet been released.
