Historic Sites Offer Fall Wildlife Programs
Springfield State Historic Sites, in partnership with Henson-Robinson Zoo, is offering expanded family programming this fall through the return of Zoo Booth and a new Building for Wildlife workshop series at the Dana-Thomas House and Old State Capitol state historic sites.
Zoo Booth brings Henson-Robinson Zoo animal ambassadors to downtown Springfield, giving families and visitors an opportunity to meet live animals while learning about wildlife, conservation and animal care. Most programs are held in the historic courtyard at the Dana-Thomas House, with select dates and rain locations at the Old State Capitol.
Admission to Zoo Booth programs is free, and no reservations are required.
Upcoming Zoo Booth programs are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, and Friday, Oct. 16, at the Dana-Thomas House. In the event of rain, those programs will move to the Old State Capitol during the same hours.
Additional programs will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6; Saturday, Nov. 21; Wednesday, Dec. 2; and Wednesday, Dec. 16, at the Old State Capitol.
The new Building for Wildlife workshop series will also give participants an opportunity to create habitat for native wildlife through hands-on projects.
Designed for adults and youth ages 12 and older, the workshops allow families to build projects together using hand tools. Each workshop lasts about 75 minutes.
A bat house workshop is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dana-Thomas House. A black-capped chickadee birdhouse workshop will follow Friday, Nov. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old State Capitol.
If there is inclement weather, the Oct. 16 workshop will move from the Dana-Thomas House courtyard to the Old State Capitol.
Online registration is available for the Building for Wildlife workshops through the State Historic Sites of Springfield.
Springfield State Historic Sites are operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which manages state parks, historic sites and other natural and cultural resources across Illinois.
