HSHS Earns Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care

HSHS St. John’s Hospital has earned Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care from The Joint Commission, a national recognition for hospitals that provide exceptional care to mothers and babies before, during and after birth. St. John’s first achieved this prestigious certification in 2023. 


The certification means families can feel confident knowing their care team follows the highest standards for safety, teamwork and compassionate care – whether welcoming a healthy newborn or managing a high-risk pregnancy. 


"This achievement tells families that they can trust us with their most precious moments,” said Jennifer Garnica, MHA, BSN, RN, HSHS Central Illinois Market Chief Nursing Officer. "It reflects our commitment to not only providing outstanding clinical care, but also creating a supportive, compassionate environment where parents feel informed, respected and empowered.” 


The Joint Commission is a U.S.-based nonprofit that works with and evaluates more than 24,000 health care organizations, public health agencies and health ministries worldwide on quality and safety of patient care. The organization’s Advanced Perinatal Care Certification is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate excellence across the full spectrum of maternity services, including labor and delivery, postpartum care and neonatal services. Hospitals must meet rigorous standards for clinical quality, patient safety, staff training and coordination of care.

For parents, the Advanced Perinatal Care Certification ensures; Care teams are trained to handle both routine and complex pregnancies; Strong communication exists between nurses, doctors and specialists; The focus is centered on safety, comfort and family-centered care.


HSHS St. John’s Hospital delivers more than 2,030 babies each year and offers services ranging from prenatal education and lactation support to the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the region, ensuring families receive seamless care close to home.
