HSHS Foundation Donates Accessible Van for Local Seniors

HSHS St. John's Foundation has donated a new wheelchair-accessible van to Senior Services of Central Illinois, expanding transportation options for older adults and individuals with disabilities who rely on the organization's senior transport program for access to medical appointments and other essential services.

The donation begins a five-year partnership between HSHS St. John's Foundation and Senior Services of Central Illinois. In addition to providing the vehicle, the foundation will fund its ongoing maintenance and the cost of a driver, ensuring the service can continue operating for years to come.

The new van joins Senior Services of Central Illinois' existing fleet of eight vehicles used by its senior transportation program. The service is available to Sangamon County residents who are 60 years of age or older, as well as adults ages 18 and older living with a disability. Transportation is provided for medical appointments and other essential destinations, helping residents maintain access to healthcare and community services.

Ali Farmer, director of HSHS St. John's Foundation, said the project reflects the foundation's commitment to improving access to care through community partnerships and donor support.

"We're really proud to support the senior transport van," Farmer said. "It's been a mission of ours at the foundation, and so many donor dollars have come together to support this incredible initiative."

Carol Harms, executive director of Senior Services of Central Illinois, said the partnership demonstrates what can be accomplished when organizations work together to address community needs.

"The partnership between HSHS and SSCI is a wonderful example of what happens when two community organizations come together with a shared commitment to serve," Harms said.

Brian Brennan, president and chief executive officer of HSHS St. John's Hospital and HSHS' Central Illinois Market, said dependable transportation plays an important role in helping older adults receive healthcare while maintaining their independence.

"Transportation should never stand between a senior and the care they need," Brennan said. "We're proud to partner on a practical solution that expands access and supports independence."

Senior Services of Central Illinois has provided services to older adults in the region for decades, offering transportation, nutrition programs, care coordination and other resources designed to help seniors remain independent in their homes and communities. The addition of the accessible van is expected to strengthen the organization's ability to meet the transportation needs of Sangamon County residents who depend on the service for routine medical care and other appointments.
