Hundreds of people received food, clothing and a hot meal this weekend during a community outreach event at the Frank and Linda Vala Dream Center of Sangamon County, organizers said.

Those who attended received large boxes of food, clothing and hot meals provided through community support. Organizers said the event was part of the Dream Center’s ongoing work to meet practical needs in the Springfield area.

One man who is living on the street came to the event wearing only pajamas, organizers said. They said he had lost fingers and toes to frostbite during the winter and did not have other clothes. Volunteers provided him with food, jeans, sweatpants, new socks, T-shirts and polos.

“He was so very thankful and grateful and he said he will be back,” organizers said.

The Dream Center serves children, families and adults through programs focused on education, food, clothing and community support. The center offers food and clothing ministries, youth and adult education opportunities, and support for underprivileged families and children.

The Frank and Linda Vala Dream Center of Sangamon County is located on North Fifth Street in Springfield. It is named for Frank and Linda Vala, whose support helped establish the center as a place for practical help, learning opportunities and community outreach.
