The Illinois Department of Transportation announced a 4.6-mile resurfacing project on Interstate 55, stretching from just north of the Sherman interchange to the Logan County line, will begin Monday, April 20. Work is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Lane closures are expected throughout the project, though at least two lanes in each direction will remain open except from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, when traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Flaggers and barrels will be used to guide motorists through the work zones.
In addition to resurfacing, the project will include guardrail replacement, shoulder maintenance and drainage improvements. Officials said the work is intended to improve safety and provide a smoother driving surface.
Motorists should expect delays and allow extra travel time when passing through the area. Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes when possible and to use caution in work zones by following posted speed limits, avoiding mobile device use and remaining alert for workers and equipment.
The project is part of the state’s broader Rebuild Illinois program. Over six years, the initiative plans to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of a $33.2 billion investment across all modes of transportation. Through Year Six, nearly $20.8 billion in improvements have been completed statewide, including work on 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
