The Abraham Lincoln Council of Scouting America will once again host its annual Lincoln Pilgrimage, bringing Scouts and youth groups from across the region to Springfield for a weekend centered on history, service, and reflection on the life of President Abraham Lincoln.

The multi-day event is scheduled to take place April 24 through April 26 and will include a series of activities across Springfield and surrounding areas, combining outdoor challenges with educational opportunities tied to Lincoln’s life and legacy.

The Lincoln Pilgrimage traces its origins back to 1946 and has since grown into a long-standing tradition, drawing generations of participants to central Illinois. Over the decades, the event has welcomed hundreds of thousands of Scouts, many of whom return year after year.

Throughout the weekend, participants will take part in a variety of activities designed for different age groups and experience levels. A central feature is the Lincoln Trail, a roughly 20-mile hike that follows the route from New Salem to Springfield, offering Scouts a physically demanding experience tied directly to Lincoln’s early life in Illinois.

In addition to the long-distance hike, the program includes shorter trails and educational experiences that guide participants through key historical sites. These include visits to locations such as Lincoln’s home, his law office, museums, and Oak Ridge Cemetery, where Lincoln is buried.

The weekend also incorporates structured programming focused on civic engagement and remembrance. Activities include wreath-laying ceremonies at veterans memorials and at Lincoln’s tomb, as well as opportunities for Scouts to learn about American history through interactive programs and site visits.

Events will culminate with the traditional Lincoln Pilgrimage ceremony and parade on Sunday. The procession begins at Lincoln’s Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery and continues to the Old State Capitol in downtown Springfield, symbolizing both reflection on Lincoln’s legacy and the continued role of civic participation among youth.

Camping options are available throughout the weekend at multiple locations in the Springfield area, including New Salem State Park and Camp Illinek, allowing participants to take part in the full schedule of activities.

Organizers note that the event is open to a wide range of youth organizations beyond traditional Scout groups, including community and service-based programs, with the goal of providing a shared opportunity to engage with history while promoting leadership and service.
