Springfield’s First Citizen Award returned Wednesday night at Erin's Pavilion in Southwind Park, drawing nearly 300 attendees to honor individuals making a difference in the community.
Out of 25 nominees, Joan Bortolon received the 2024 First Citizen Award for her work supporting local veterans. As Board President of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight, Bortolon has coordinated more than 70 flights for over 60,000 veterans over the past 15 years, ensuring they are honored for their service.
The Land of Lincoln Honor Flight provides free trips for veterans to visit Washington, D.C., where they can reflect at the memorials built in their honor. Bortolon’s efforts have made it possible for veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to experience this meaningful journey, which includes special recognition and remembrance ceremonies. Her dedication to the mission has made a lasting impact on veterans and their families throughout the community.
After a hiatus of several years, the First Citizen Award was revived by past organizers and local sponsors, including banks, businesses, and medical institutions. Originally established in 1963 by Springfield’s Copley-owned newspapers, the award recognizes individuals whose contributions improve Springfield beyond their professional duties.
