Springfield Police Report Eight Firearm Arrests

The Springfield Police Department reported that eight people were arrested on firearm-related charges during a weekend enforcement operation aimed at reducing gun violence and weapon offenses in the city.

According to a media release issued Monday, the department assigned additional officers to patrol during the evening and overnight hours of July 25 into the early morning of July 26. Working alongside the Street Crimes Unit, officers conducted proactive enforcement efforts focused on investigating gun-related offenses and preventing violence.

During the seven-hour operation, officers made eight firearm-related arrests and seized nine firearms. Police said the enforcement effort was part of the department's ongoing strategy of increasing patrols during weekends to address violent crime and illegal weapons offenses.

The department also noted that each person arrested during the operation resides outside the City of Springfield. Police said those taken into custody listed addresses in Peoria, Decatur, Jacksonville, Florence and Lansing. Officials said the arrests should serve as a reminder that the department maintains a zero-tolerance approach to firearm-related offenses and associated violence, particularly during block parties and other community events that attract visitors to the city.

Charges filed in connection with the arrests include unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, armed violence, armed habitual criminal and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Police did not release additional information about the individual cases or identify those arrested.
