Letter to the Editor: Data Centers Support Daily Life

The recent approval of a data center in Sangamon County has sparked debate, but one point should not be overlooked: every one of us uses data every day.

Every email, text message, social media post, video call, online search, streaming service, digital payment and cloud-based document depends on data infrastructure. The demand for data is not being created by one project or one company. It is being created by all of us through the way we live, work, communicate and do business.

Even the campaigns opposing projects like this rely on the very technology they criticize. Social media posts, online petitions, digital advertisements and flyers created with artificial intelligence all require massive amounts of data processing and storage. Those tools do not exist in a vacuum. They depend on facilities like data centers.

That does not mean questions about development, energy use, land use and local impact should be ignored. Those discussions are important, and public officials should continue to hold projects accountable. But pretending we can benefit from modern technology while refusing to build the infrastructure that supports it is not realistic.

Sangamon County should be thoughtful about growth, but it should also recognize that data infrastructure is now part of everyday life. If we want the benefits of a modern digital economy, we have to be willing to support the backbone that makes it possible.
