Illinois voters can begin requesting their vote-by-mail ballots today as the 2026 election cycle enters its first major phase. The application window, which opened December 17, allows residents to request a ballot online, by mail, or in person through their county clerk’s office, including Sangamon County.
Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray said the start of the vote-by-mail period is a key milestone for local election administration and for voters planning ahead of the March 17 primary. “Secure and accessible elections are our highest priority. Vote-by-mail is a safe, reliable option that helps voters participate whether they’re at home, traveling, or wintering out of state. I encourage everyone who chooses this method to apply early so their vote is counted without any delay.”
Applications require basic voter information and a party selection for the primary ballot. Ballots will begin mailing to voters on February 5, and the last day to request a ballot is March 12. Election officials continue to encourage early applications, particularly for voters who leave Illinois during the winter months and may face mail delays.
Local races are expected to draw strong interest this cycle, including the Republican primary for Sangamon County Sheriff. Current Sheriff Paula Crouch is seeking election to a full term and recently received endorsements from former Sheriff Neil Williamson, State’s Attorney John Milhiser, and a unanimous endorsement from the Sangamon County Republican Party. Countywide offices, legislative seats, and contested local primaries are also on the ballot, making early voting and vote-by-mail an important part of voter turnout.
Voters will also decide whether Sangamon County should form and fund a new mental health board through a small sales tax increase of 0.05 cents for every ten dollars spent. The proposal appears on the ballot as a binding referendum.
The election calendar, applications, and instructions for requesting a ballot are available through the Sangamon County Clerk’s Office. Vote-by-mail requests remain open through March 12 ahead of the March 17 primary.
