Massey Commission Announces First Listening Session

The co-chairs of the recently established Massey Commission have announced their first listening session, set for Monday, September 16, 2024, at Union Baptist Church, located at 1405 E. Monroe St. The session will begin at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

The Massey Commission, formed in response to the tragic killing of Sonya Massey on July 6, aims to gather community input before finalizing its mission and goals. The commission is a citizen-led initiative created to address concerns regarding law enforcement practices, mental health responses, and community relations.

Co-chairs Dr. Jerry Kruse, Dean and Provost of the SIU School of Medicine; Pastor T. Ray McJunkins, pastor of Union Baptist Church; and Nina Harris, chair of the Illinois Commission on Equity and Inclusion, are leading the effort to ensure the community’s voices are heard. The listening session is designed to provide a platform for public input, where speakers will have up to three minutes to share their thoughts. Attendees interested in speaking can sign up upon arrival.

This listening session will take place before the commission’s full membership is finalized and official hearings begin. The co-chairs are currently reviewing the approximately 200 applications submitted by local residents interested in serving on the 12-member commission. The final roster of commissioners and the dates for public hearings will be announced later this month.

The Massey Commission was officially announced on August 16, 2024, by Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter and State Senator Doris Turner. The creation of the commission followed a wave of community outcry and thoughtful comments after the death of Sonya Massey, who was killed by a former Sangamon County deputy. The commission is committed to leading a process that encourages the community to listen, learn, and take meaningful action.
