A new law aimed at educating drivers on the dangers of vehicles hauling hazardous materials has been signed into law. The legislation, Senate Bill 3406, was introduced in response to a tragic accident in Illinois involving a tanker carrying hazardous substances that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

Senator Steve McClure spearheaded the initiative, filing the bill to raise awareness about the risks posed by vehicles transporting hazardous materials on the state’s roadways. "This law is about saving lives and preventing tragedies like the one we saw here in Illinois," McClure stated.

Under the new law, the Illinois Secretary of State is required to include information on hazardous material placards in the state’s “Rules of the Road” publication, which is a key part of driver’s education programs. By teaching new drivers how to recognize and respond to vehicles carrying hazardous materials, the law aims to reduce accidents and enhance roadway safety.

The bill was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor, marking a significant step in improving public safety on Illinois roads.
