One Dead in Shooting, SPD Investigating

Springfield police continue to investigate a late-night shooting that left one man dead and another person injured on Thursday.
According to the Springfield Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:15 p.m. on January 8, 2026, to the 1600 block of East Edwards Street following reports of multiple shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a nearby vehicle with two gunshot victims.
A female victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the identity of the deceased victim as Barrion Sanders, a 20-year-old man from Springfield. Sanders was transported by emergency medical services from the scene and was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m. shortly after arriving at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.
An autopsy conducted Friday determined Sanders died from multiple gunshot wounds. His death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office and the Springfield Police Department.
Detectives with the Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and crime scene personnel continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
