Pedestrian killed in ISP-Involved Springfield Crash

A pedestrian was killed early Saturday in a crash involving an Illinois State Police trooper in Springfield, according to authorities.
The crash happened April 25, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of South 6th Street and Linton Avenue. Police said the trooper was traveling south in the middle lane on South 6th Street and approaching a green light when a pedestrian, who was reportedly bent down in the roadway, was struck by the squad car.
The trooper rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Coroner Jim Allmon identified the victim as Charles Henderson, 45, of Springfield. Henderson was transported to Springfield Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. by emergency room staff. An autopsy conducted later that day found he died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the incident.
In accordance with state law, the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation is handling the investigation. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with evidence being processed and interviews conducted.
Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. The death also remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner.
