The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office will host a Drug and Vape Take Back Event on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health and Community Services Building, located at 2833 South Grand Avenue East in Springfield.

The event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nationwide effort to provide residents with a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused or expired medications and vaping devices. The initiative is intended to reduce the risk of misuse, accidental ingestion, and environmental harm associated with improper disposal.

Residents may drop off all legal pharmaceutical medications, including both liquids and solid forms. Items such as needles, injectables, and syringes will not be accepted. Officials ask that all medications be secured with tightly fitted caps to prevent leaking or spilling.

The event will also accept vapes and e-cigarettes, provided that batteries are removed prior to drop-off. Devices with non-removable batteries cannot be collected.

“Unused or expired medications are a hidden danger in many homes,” said Sheriff Paula Crouch. “By taking part in events like this, we are helping prevent misuse and accidental ingestion. I’m proud to partner with the public health department and the DEA to make it easier for Sangamon County residents to safely clear out their medicine cabinets.”

Residents who cannot attend the Springfield event can find nearby collection sites by visiting www.DEATakeBack.com

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has operated for more than a decade, offering an anonymous and accessible way for individuals to dispose of medications. The program has resulted in the collection of thousands of tons of unused drugs nationwide, helping limit their availability for misuse.

The April 25 event is free and open to the public. Residents may participate by driving up to the collection site and dropping off accepted items with on-site personnel.
