Drivers navigating Interstate 55 through Sangamon County on Monday morning encountered an unexpected scene as a truckload of produce spilled across the highway, prompting cleanup efforts and brief disruptions to traffic. The Illinois Department of Transportation confirmed that a load of tomatoes being transported overturned or spilled along a portion of the northbound lanes, leaving the bright red fruit scattered across the pavement and several crushed boxes piled nearby, according to photos shared by IDOT on social media.

Fortunately, no motorists or first responders were injured as a result of the incident, with authorities noting that the only casualties were the “pasta-ready tomatoes” strewn about the roadway.
