A residential fire on the 800 block of Enterprise Street in Springfield led to multiple rescues and displaced five residents Saturday morning.
The Springfield Fire Department was dispatched at 9:48 a.m. on November 30, 2025, after reports of a structure fire in a multi-story home that had been converted into several apartments. Crews arrived to find smoke showing and reports of several trapped occupants.
Firefighters immediately initiated rescue operations, including a ladder rescue for a person hanging from a second-floor window, who was brought to safety within two minutes. Two additional trapped occupants were rescued from the first floor. All survivors were evaluated on scene and declined further medical treatment or transport.
Because of the number of trapped residents, the Incident Commander upgraded the alarm to bring in additional units. While rescues were underway, crews quickly contained and extinguished the fire as it began spreading through the building. A search of the structure found no additional victims.
Residents told firefighters several pets were still inside. Crews located and removed the animals, though some had already died from smoke inhalation and could not be revived.
Investigators from the Springfield Fire Department Division II responded to determine the fire’s origin and cause, which remains undetermined. The building sustained moderate fire damage and heavy smoke damage throughout. Five residents were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. No other injuries were reported.
