Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray has announced the start of the county’s biennial voter registration verification effort, a process required by law to ensure election records remain current and accurate.
Over the next several weeks, all registered voters in Sangamon County will receive a Voter I.D. card by mail. If a card is returned as undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service, the Election Office will follow up by sending an address confirmation letter, giving voters the opportunity to update their information.
“It is important that our voter registration records are up to date and clean of inaccurate registrations,” Gray said. “This voter verification process ensures the accuracy of our voter rolls and provides voters the opportunity to update their voting address to maintain their eligibility to vote. Current and accurate voter rolls leads to smooth and secure elections.”
The Election Office is also asking residents to help by returning any Voter I.D. cards delivered to their address in error. If a card arrives for someone who no longer lives at that address, officials ask that “not at this address” be written on the envelope and placed back in the mailbox for return.
Efforts like this come amid heightened national discussion over election integrity. While research shows instances of ineligible or fraudulent voting—including non-citizens or deceased individuals—are extremely rare, public concern persists. By proactively verifying addresses and removing outdated registrations, Sangamon County’s process aims to strengthen public trust and demonstrate a commitment to secure, reliable elections.
