County Board Accepting Applications for District 16 Vacancy

The Sangamon County Board is accepting applications to fill the District 16 vacancy following the resignation of longtime board member Greg Stumpf, who stepped down after more than 32 years of service.

Stumpf's resignation took effect on September 15, 2026. He began serving on the County Board in 1994 and held positions on nearly every committee during his tenure. Throughout his time in office, Stumpf worked alongside fellow board members on county initiatives while remaining involved in community activities throughout Springfield.

In his resignation letter to Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter, Stumpf reflected on his years in office and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent the residents of District 16.

"My time on this board has been very extensive and I am very proud of all of our accomplishments over the years," Stumpf wrote. "I love to help people and this has been a great experience doing so over all of the years."

Outside of his County Board responsibilities, Stumpf continues to help manage a homeless ministry in Springfield and remains involved in several community activities. Although he plans to take a break from some of his current responsibilities, he indicated that he remains open to future opportunities to serve the community.

Stumpf also thanked his fellow board members for their work together over the years, acknowledging the responsibilities and challenges associated with serving in county government.

"I am very proud and humbled to serve with all of our Sangamon County Board members on this board," Stumpf wrote. "What we do as members and the decisions we make is at times very tough. You are a great group of people to work with and I have full confidence in you all."

Van Meter thanked Stumpf for his service and his commitment to the residents of District 16.

“Greg has been a dedicated member of the Sangamon County Board for more than three decades, and his commitment to the residents of District 16 and our community has been greatly appreciated,” Van Meter said. “His experience, willingness to serve, and passion to help others have made him a valued colleague. On behalf of the County Board, I want to thank Greg for his many years of service and wish him the very best as he begins this next chapter.”

The County Board Office has begun accepting applications from individuals interested in filling the vacancy. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 2, with interviews of potential nominees scheduled for the week of October 5. An appointment is expected to be made at the October 13 County Board meeting.

Under Illinois law, the County Board Chairman is responsible for appointing an individual to fill the vacancy, subject to the advice and consent of the County Board. The appointee must be affiliated with the same political party as the departing officeholder, which for District 16 is the Republican Party.

Applicants must also be registered voters within District 16 and have resided in Sangamon County for at least one year prior to the appointment.
