The Springfield Area Arts Council will bring Shakespeare in the Park back to Enos Park on Friday, July 24, with a performance exploring the influence of William Shakespeare on Abraham Lincoln.
The free event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Enos Park, 1000 N. Seventh St. in Springfield.
Now in its third year, Shakespeare in the Park will take a different approach from previous seasons. This year’s event will feature Illinois playwright Kevin Purcell’s one-act play, “Lincoln and Shakespeare,” starring Carbondale actor Kim Curlee.
The production is being presented in recognition of the nation’s upcoming America 250 commemorations and focuses on Lincoln, who called Springfield home before becoming president.
Says Purcell, "The focus of the play is this question: Did Lincoln's love of Shakespeare influence his writing and actions?”
Through a combination of history, literature and performance, the play examines how Shakespeare may have shaped Lincoln’s character, thinking and leadership during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
The play was performed earlier this year at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, where it attracted enthusiastic audiences and nearly sold out each performance.
Following the performance at Enos Park, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the artists. The discussion will offer additional insight into the historical research, creative process and connections between Lincoln and Shakespeare.
"Over the past two years, Shakespeare in the Park has brought professional outdoor Shakespeare performances to Springfield," said Bella Szabo, Executive Director of the Springfield Area Arts Council. "This year, we're excited to present a unique production that celebrates both our nation's history and the incredible talent found right here in our community. The success of Lincoln and Shakespeare earlier this year demonstrated just how much interest there is in this fascinating story."
Admission is free and open to the public. A suggested donation of $25 will help support future Shakespeare in the Park performances and other free arts programs offered by the Arts Council.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the outdoor performance in one of Springfield’s historic neighborhoods. Additional information is available on the event’s webpage.
By continuing to host Shakespeare in the Park at Enos Park, the Arts Council aims to provide accessible arts experiences that bring people together, encourage community engagement and celebrate the cultural and historical heritage of the Springfield area.
The Springfield Area Arts Council serves Sangamon and Menard counties by promoting and supporting art forms and providing opportunities for residents to participate in and enjoy the arts. Its office is located in the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. Sixth St. in Springfield.
