As the holiday shopping season gets underway, Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch and Crime Stoppers Coordinator Officer Chris Jones are urging residents to take simple precautions to protect themselves and their belongings. The pair released a new video this week outlining key steps shoppers can take to reduce the risk of theft and stay safe during one of the busiest times of the year.

In the message, Sheriff Crouch emphasized the importance of staying alert and taking preventative measures before leaving a vehicle unattended. “As we approach the holiday shopping season, we have three safety tips we would like to remind you: hide it, lock it, or take it,” she said, noting that the majority of seasonal thefts occur when valuables are left in plain view.

Officer Jones echoed that advice, reminding shoppers to place newly purchased items in the trunk and avoid leaving bags or packages visible inside the vehicle. He also encouraged residents to lock their doors every time they exit the vehicle and to park in well-lit, populated areas whenever possible.

Crouch added that these simple reminders can significantly reduce crime during the holidays. “We want you to have a happy and safe holiday season, and following these three tips will help make you successful,” she said.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Office guidance, safety experts recommend several other best practices during the holidays. Shoppers are encouraged to keep purses and wallets close to their bodies, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and remain aware of their surroundings when walking to and from their vehicles.

Residents ordering gifts online should track packages and bring deliveries indoors promptly to reduce the risk of porch theft. Those traveling for the holidays are also advised to avoid posting travel plans on social media until after returning home.
