The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will offer residents a free and anonymous way to safely dispose of unneeded prescription medications.
Locally, the Sheriff’s Office will host a collection site at 2833 South Grand Avenue, at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.
The national initiative, now in its 10th year, aims to prevent drug misuse by helping the public clear out their homes of old, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs. According to the DEA, Take Back Day has resulted in the removal of more than 9,285 tons of medications from circulation since it began.
Accepted items include tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids such as cough syrup must remain sealed in their original containers with caps tightly closed. Syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted.
