Sheriff's Office Urges Halloween Safety Precautions

With Halloween fast approaching, the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to prioritize safety while trick-or-treating. Sheriff Paula Crouch reminds families and children to follow a few important tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Sheriff Crouch advises that young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult, while older children going out on their own should have a pre-planned route and a designated return time. Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to visit only homes with porch lights on and to avoid entering homes or vehicles for treats.

To help prevent pedestrian injuries—one of the most common Halloween-related incidents—the Sheriff's Office recommends that trick-or-treaters stay in groups, wear reflective tape on costumes or bags, and carry a cellphone for easy communication. They should also stick to well-lit streets, use sidewalks when possible, and cross streets only at crosswalks or intersections. Sheriff Crouch reminds everyone not to assume the right of way, as drivers may have difficulty spotting trick-or-treaters.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious or unlawful activity to local law enforcement to help keep the community safe this Halloween.
