Authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Springfield man who was fatally shot Friday night on the city’s south side.
Shortly before 10:50 p.m. on November 21, Springfield Police were dispatched to the 2400 block of South 13th Street after receiving a report that a vehicle had crashed into a detached garage. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive male inside the vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim, identified by Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon as Leslie Broomfield, was transported by EMS to Springfield Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m., shortly after his arrival.
An autopsy performed Saturday determined that Broomfield died from multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives from the Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene Friday night to begin processing evidence and conducting interviews.
Both the Coroner’s Office and Springfield Police Department are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Springfield Police Department at 217-788-8311 or Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427.
