SPD Launches Online Transparency Dashboard

The Springfield Police Department has launched a new online Transparency Dashboard aimed at giving the public easier access to information about police operations, crime and law enforcement activity in the city.

The dashboard includes crime statistics and information about police enforcement activities, with additional data on Internal Affairs investigations and use-of-force incidents expected to be added. The department said the Internal Affairs and use-of-force information is still being finalized in coordination with a third-party vendor.

The online system includes interactive charts and graphs using data from more than 96,000 police reports dating back to January 2021. Users can review information for the city as a whole or examine data by ward, neighborhood and time of day, along with other categories depending on the type of incident. Some data can also be broken down by race, gender and age. Specific residential addresses are not displayed to protect residents' privacy.

The dashboards are expected to be updated every 24 hours. The Springfield Police Department and the city's information technology staff developed the system internally without an outside contract or additional city spending.

The dashboard also includes the City of Springfield and Police Department's responses to recommendations from the Massey Commission that directly apply to the city.

Information related to specific police incidents is also being made available through the transparency effort. The department has provided updates regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Jan. 10, 2026, as well as a July 4 incident involving an off-duty Springfield police sergeant.

The department noted that some information may not be released while open investigations, internal investigations or active court proceedings are underway.
