With the holiday season underway, the Springfield Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to secure their belongings and vehicles. Law enforcement officials note that this time of year often sees a rise in motor vehicle break-ins and thefts, as thieves target busy shopping areas, neighborhoods, and parking lots.
To combat this trend, the department has launched a city-wide reminder campaign, Lock It, Hide It, Keep It Safe, aimed at educating the public on key safety measures to prevent theft.
The campaign emphasizes four main tips:
Lock Your Vehicle – Always lock your car, even if stepping away for just a few minutes, and take your keys or key fob with you.
Remove or Conceal Valuables – Avoid leaving purses, wallets, electronics, shopping bags, or gifts in plain view. Take them with you or secure them out of sight.
Park in Well-Lit Areas – Choose parking spots that are well-lit and populated, making them less attractive to potential thieves.
Be Mindful of Holiday Shopping – During the holidays, vehicles are more likely to contain valuable items. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
"The holiday season is meant to be a joyful time, but it’s also a time to stay alert,” said Springfield Police Detective Ryan Maddox. “Taking these simple precautions can help prevent you from becoming a potential victim of theft.
"We encourage all residents to remain aware of their surroundings and take extra care with personal security. If you notice any suspicious activity, please report it immediately to the Springfield Police Department at the non-emergency number 217-788-8311, or dial 911 in an emergency.
"Let’s work together to make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for everyone. Remember: Lock It, Hide It, Keep It Safe.”
Residents are encouraged to adopt these measures to protect their vehicles and belongings and to help make the holiday season more secure for the entire community.
