Springfield Man Charged with First-Degree Murder

A Springfield man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of 54-year-old Sean Campbell, who was found deceased early Monday morning at a residence on the city’s east side.


According to the Springfield Police Department, officers responded to a report of a possible shooting at approximately 5:47 a.m. on October 6 in the 1200 block of East Kansas Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Campbell dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.


The Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, confirmed Campbell’s identity later that day, stating that an autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound.


On October 7, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office charged 57-year-old Rod White of Springfield with first-degree murder, possession of a weapon by a felon, and possession of a weapon by a repeat felony offender.

White had been taken into custody shortly after the incident on unrelated charges while detectives continued their investigation. The Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the case.
