Springfield Man Dies After Friday Night Shooting

A 31-year-old Springfield man has died after a shooting Friday night in Springfield, according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon.
Officers with the Springfield Police Department were dispatched at approximately 8:48 p.m. March 6 to the 1300 block of East Jackson Street following a ShotSpotter alert indicating several possible gunshots.
When officers arrived, they located an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency medical aid before the victim was transported by ambulance to HSHS St. John’s Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. by hospital staff.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Springfield Police detectives processed the scene, interviewed witnesses and collected evidence. Police arrested 23-year-old Randy Crockett on firearms-related charges, including possession of a firearm without a FOID card and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Crockett was transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
