On April 29, 2019, officers responded to a call at a residence in the 1600 block of North 7th Street and found Sommer deceased from a single gunshot wound to his upper body. Sommer, who lived alone at the residence, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation involved collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), United States Secret Service, United States Marshals Service, Illinois Department of Corrections, Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory, and the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On November 8, 2024, Morgan C. Allin, a 36-year-old Springfield woman, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Sommer’s death. A Sangamon County grand jury indicted Allin on three counts of first-degree murder on November 13, 2024. She was arraigned on November 21, 2024, and remains in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.
