State Flag Redesign Process Begins

The process to potentially replace the Illinois state flag has officially begun, as the Illinois Flag Commission starts accepting public submissions for a new design. The current flag, featuring the state seal on a white background with "Illinois" beneath it, has been in place since 1970. The state seal, central to the flag's design, dates back to 1869 and reflects heraldic traditions popular after the Civil War, depicting an eagle, state motto, and other symbolic elements.

A national movement has encouraged many states with traditional seal-based flags to adopt modern designs. States like Minnesota, Mississippi, and Utah have already taken similar steps. In Illinois, the initiative faced opposition from House Republicans, but the Democratic supermajority in the General Assembly advanced the legislation, leading to the creation of the Illinois Flag Commission.

The public can submit flag proposals until October 18. The commission will then select 10 finalists, which will be made available for public advisory voting starting January 1, 2025. This process will remain open through mid-February, with voters able to express their preference for a new design or to retain the current flag.

Following public input, the commission will recommend a final design to the 104th Illinois General Assembly, where lawmakers will decide whether to adopt the new state flag.
