A recent economic impact study has revealed that the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) added $943.2 million to Illinois’s economy in fiscal year 2023. Through its operations, student and visitor spending, alumni productivity, and volunteer activities, UIS supports 9,093 jobs statewide.
The report shows that UIS graduates generate the largest share of economic benefit, contributing $847.9 million to the state economy. This figure is derived from their higher earnings and increased contributions to businesses across Illinois. UIS’s operations, including payroll, accounted for about $80.4 million in economic activity, supporting 1,119 jobs, while student and visitor spending added $11.6 million and roughly $797,000 respectively.
Beyond its monetary impact, UIS delivers strong return on investment metrics for students, taxpayers, and society at large. For every dollar students invest in their UIS education, they receive about $5.70 in higher lifetime earnings. Public funding yields about $3.50 in added tax revenue and public sector savings for every dollar spent, and the broader societal return is estimated at $9.90 per dollar invested. Additionally, UIS graduates earn on average $33,900 more annually compared to Illinois workers with a high school diploma, translating to around $1.3 million in additional lifetime earnings per graduate.
Chancellor Janet L. Gooch emphasized that UIS plays a crucial role in preparing students for high-demand careers while bolstering both regional workforce development and economic growth. She noted that many UIS alumni remain in Illinois, contributing to local communities and helping meet evolving workforce needs.
